Quake 3 - widescreen issue?

Just gone back to retro and got Quake 3 Arena, prob is my laptop is widescreen, and quake 3 seems to run at 4:3, if i adjust res to widescreen it locks up. any ideas how to fill my entire screen, i have no other PC game do this......
