Isn't it strange that in the US?

The latin-Americans that often have European ancestry, speak a European language (Spanish and Portuguese), practice a European religion (roman catholicism) and often have a majoritary European ancestry are not considered white, while north Africans, who speak a semitic middle eastern language, practice Islam and often look very distinctive from Europeans are considered white. Strange isn't it?
